This poem is about a man that spend days and months in the sea, trying to go to his home. He starts saying that he could tell us about what he went through (what he felt). but he is not complaining about "physical suffering", he talks about how lonely he was in all this journey, all the days he spent in the deep and huge sea, with nobody to be with, just the sound of the birds and the waves. At first he wants to return back to his home as I said before, he has this hope and faith to keep going. He is scared about the rough and giant waves, the currents, but he has to move on. He looks for a foreign land now, and he explains the differences between landmen than seafarers, that they have lack of bravery, kindness, and many other things. He also talks about finding a place in life.
He starts thinking what's death and what is after it, he is mad with "landmen" because they only care about wealthiness and its not okay, he says that after you die, even if you are buried with all your treasures, money and gold, it will not go with you, it will stay on earth, and also if you've had a life full of crimes and sins you will not go to heaven and with God. He also says that we should all love but fear God, he made the world, he put us all in here and will take our lives.
At the end he starts saying that there is no glory in earth's kingdoms and kings, or rulers or whatever. He grows old and all of his friends died and he has nothing left but God and his faith on him. And he says that his home is with God.
This whole poem talks about the temporal and the eternal. And about the power of believing and faith.
Motif: God, exile
Plot: Enjoy life, value the little things you have . Everything comes to an end.
